FLOYD 'MONEY' MAYWEATHER JR. STRIPPED OF TITLE

The undisputed world champion, Floyd Mayweather Jr. was recently stripped of his WBO (World Boxing Organization) title because he did not pay a sanction fee, which is necessary for that specific belt.  It is a requirement for any boxer fighting for the WBO title belt to pay 3 percent of their purse.  In this case, Mayweather would have had to pay $200,000, which is extremely high for a sanction fee, but his refusal to pay cost him the WBO title belt.  As a result, Welterweight fighter Timothy Bradley is now the WBO champion following his victory June 27th against Jessie Vargas.  It appears that this really doesn't have much of an affect on Mayweather because he is still the undisputed pound-for-pound champion.

2015 NBA FREE AGENCY RECAP

image.jpg

All-Star Power Forward, LaMarcus Aldridge, who for all intents and purposes was the biggest free agent on the market this offseason other than Lebron James, had finally settled on signing with the San Antonio Spurs. It was a reported max 4-year, $80 million agreement with a player option following the third year to perhaps take advantage of the new TV money that will substantially escalate player salaries in the near future.

With all due respect to the current 2015 NBA Champion Golden State Warriors, this seismic signing sets up a very likely 'Clash of the Titans' between the San Antonio Spurs and Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2016 NBA Finals. This is based on the assumption that pending free agents SF Lebron James and PF Tristan Thompson's likely stay in Cleveland.

Some other notable agreements that have taken place, which involved players changing teams, were DeAndre Jordan surprisingly leaving the Los Angeles Clippers in favor of the Dallas Mavericks for a max 4-year $80 million deal, and Greg Monroe's decision to bypass the New York Knicks to join the Milwaukee Bucks with a 3-year $50 million deal.  Here's a list of other significant agreements accross the league:

C Marc Gasol: 5-year, $100 million deal w/ Memphis Grizzlies
PF Kevin Love: 5-year, $110 million deal w/ Cleveland Cavaliers
SG Dywane Wade: 1-year, $20 million deal w/ Miami Heat
SF Kawhi Leonard: 5-year, $90 million deal w/ San Antonio Spurs
SG Jimmy Butler: 5-year, $90 million deal w/ Chicago Bulls
PF Draymond Green: 5-year, $85 million deal w/ Golden State Warriors
PG Goran Dragic: 5-year, $90 million deal w/ Miami Heat
C Brook Lopez: 3-year, $60 million deal w/ Brooklyn Nets
PF Paul Millsap: 3-year, $60 million deal w/ Atlanta Hawks
SF Demarre Carroll: 4-year, $60 million deal w/ Toronto Raptors
C Tyson Chandler: 4-year, $52 million deal w/ Phoenix Suns
SG Wesley Matthews: 4-year, $60 million deal w/ Dallas Mavericks
C Robin Lopez: 4-year, $54 million deal w/ New York KnicksR

UFC SUPERSTAR FADING FAST AMIDST LEGAL TROUBLES

Once thought of as unbeatable, untouchable and possibly on track to become the greatest ever in the Octagon, Jon Jones finds himself facing a possible 3-year imprisonment due to his latest blunder of a hit-and-run incident that resulted in a 3-car collision, which took place in Albuquerque, New Mexico on April 26th. The collision involved a pregnant lady named Vanessa Sonnenburg, who suffered a fractured arm. There was also a witness at the sight of the accident that had urged the MMA fighter not to leave the scene, but was unsuccessful, which ultimately led to Jones being arrested a few days later. Several months before in January, it was made public that Jones had tested positive for cocaine use prior to his mega-match with the very outspoken and current Light Heavyweight UFC Champion Daniel Cormier.

Apparently, the DA is ready to proceed the hit-and-run case to the grand jury in light of evidence involving the victim's medical records and reports from the Albuquerque Police Department that could possibly result in a 3-year sentencing for the hit-and-run felony charge, which would would be a devastating blow to a once extremely promising MMA career of the former UFC champ. At one point, not only was he unquestionably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the game, but a also a hero outside the Octagon from tracking down car thieves hours before a championship bout to providing hotel accommodations for a lady and her child that was abandoned by her boyfriend in South Beach. How quickly his star has fallen from grace and one can only hope that he gets back on the right track to restore both his personal and professional life.

2015 NBA FINALS ARE NOW SET: GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS vs CLEVELAND CAVALIERS

The Golden State Warriors finally wrapped up the Western Conference title with a 104 - 90 victory over the Houston Rockets led by NBA MVP Stephen Curry's 26 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals in Game 5.  The runner-up NBA MVP, James Harden, did not help the Rocket's cause by setting a post season record of 13 turnovers in a single game.  The record was previously held by John Williamson and ultimately led to the demise of Houston's season.

This will be the first time since 1975 that the Golden State Warriors make an NBA Finals appearance when they captured their last NBA Championship while in Oakland after moving from San Francisco and were then led by hall-of-famer Rick Barry.  For the Cleveland Cavaliers, this will be their first showing in the Finals since 2007 when they were led by a young and spry 22-year old Lebron James.  The Cavaliers have never won a championship in their franchise's history and hope to claim their first title, thus ending the 51-year championship drought in Cleveland amongst all the city's  professional franchises since 1964.

LEBRON LEADS CAVS TO 2ND NBA FINALS APPEARANCE

The Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the #1 seeded Atlanta Hawks in impressive fashion with a 118 - 88 thumping to finish the 4-game sweep of the Eastern Conference Finals and punch their tickets to the 2015 NBA Finals.  They will face the winner of the Western Conference Finals between the Golden State Warriors and the Houston Rockets.  Northeast Ohio's prodigal son, Lebron James nearly averaged a triple-double for the entire series with 30.3 points per game, 11.0 rebounds per game and 9.3 assists per game.  He could have become the only player in the history of the NBA to average 30, 10 and 10 for a triple-double in a series, but came just a few assists short, primarily because of sitting out the entire 4th quarter with the game well at hand.  All Star point guard Kyrie Irving provided a spark tonight by starting and providing the Cavaliers with a much needed scoring punch with 16 points in 21 minutes to go along with 5 assists and 4 rebound.  It appears that the NBA world may get the marquee match up they want if the Golden State Warriors can take care of business against the Rockets to setup a Stephen Curry versus Lebron James showdown.

Cavaliers Win Third Game, Continues With 3-0 Lead...

image.jpg

...and the Cavaliers have done it again. Down to the wire, neck and neck, they continue their lead in the current NBA Eastern Finals, winning the third consecutive game against the Atlanta Hawks. With the game having stretched into overtime, the Cavs bested the Hawks with a score of 114-111. Lebron James scored 37 points with 18 rebounds and 13 assists. Some fans were worried, as Kyrie Irving sat out this game due to a knee injury and subsequent tendinitis. He also say out for game 2.

This win places the Cavaliers at a 3-0 advantage. Tonight's game was held here in Cleveland at Quicken Loans Arena, as will game 4, which is scheduled for Tuesday, May 26 at 8:30pm.

Harlem Globetrotters Legend and Hall of Famer Marques Haynes Passes Away at 89....

image.jpg

PHOENIX, May 24, 2015  -- Legendary Harlem Globetrotter Marques Haynes – considered by many to be the greatest basketball dribbler of all-time – died of natural causes at 4:35 this morning in Plano, Texas, at the age of 89. He passed away peacefully with family and friends in his presence. Services are pending.

In a four-decade career, Haynes played in more than 12,000 games, traveled more than four million miles and entertained fans in nearly 100 countries during two stints with the Globetrotters (1947-53, 1972-79). His dribbling style would confuse and confound opponents and became one of the Globetrotters' most potent offensive weapons.

image.jpg

"The game of basketball has lost one of its most iconic figures," said Globetrotters CEO Kurt Schneider. "Marques was a pioneer, helping pave the way for people of all races to have opportunities to play basketball and for the sport to explode on a global scale. His unique and groundbreaking style of play set the tone for modern basketball as we know it; anyone involved with basketball worldwide is indebted to Marques. He was the consummate Globetrotter.

"We will be dedicating our upcoming 90th anniversary tour in 2016 to Marques, and the team will wear a commemorative patch on our uniforms to salute the significant contributions he made to basketball and the Globetrotters," said Schneider.

The acrobatic Haynes caught the attention of Harlem Globetrotters owner Abe Saperstein in 1946, during a game in which Langston defeated the Globetrotters, 74-70.  Following graduation, Haynes joined the Globetrotters and starred for the team when it defeated the George Mikan-led Minneapolis Lakers in 1948 (61-59) and in 1949 (49-45).

In 1998, Haynes became the first player ever to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a Globetrotter. He has been enshrined into a total of six Halls of Fame, including NAIA (1985), Jim Thorpe (1993) and Langston University (1995). On Dec. 8, 2007, Langston University honored Haynes by dedicating its basketball court as "Marques Haynes Court."

Haynes received a Globetrotters "Legends" Ring and had his jersey (#20) retired as part of a 75th Anniversary black tie charity fund-raiser on Jan. 5, 2001, at Chicago's Fairmont Hotel. Only five Globetrotters jersey numbers have been retired in the team's storied history.

Haynes' basketball career began at Booker T. Washington High School in his hometown of Sand Springs, Okla., where he led the school to a high school national championship in 1941 and was named a Second Team Scholastic All-America that season. Haynes then starred collegiately at Langston University in Langston, Okla. (1942-46), where he was a four-time All-Conference selection and team MVP. Haynes led Langston in scoring all four years and guided the team to a 112-3 record, a mark that included a 59-game winning streak.

SHOULD THE CAVS SIT OUT KYRIE FOR THE NBA FINALS?

Thus far the 2015 Eastern Conference Finals has been dominated by the Cleveland Cavaliers despite the adversity and injuries that they have dealt with throughout the post season.  They lost All-Star Power Forward Kevin Love in the first round due to a dislocated shoulder,  J.R. Smith had served a 2-game suspension and now the All-Star Point Guard Kyrie Irving is dealing with both a right ankle sprain and tendinitis in his left knee.  The injuries have been frustrating, to say the least, but it hasn't stopped the Cavs from advancing through the playoffs and they currently hold a commanding 2 - 0 games lead against the #1 seeded Atlanta Hawks.  Cleveland has transformed from one of the worst defensive teams in the beginning of the regular season to the best defensive team in the post season.  Irving's effectiveness has digressed throughout the last few playoff rounds and has become so frustrated with his lingering injuries that he had reportedly sought out a second opinion on his left knee tendinitis with the heralded orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews to be ensured that there was no additional damage as a result of his attempts to play through the pain.  The MRI conducted by Dr Andrews confirmed there was no additional damage that would require surgery and offered a different remedy plan to treat Irving's tendinitis.  The dilemma that the Cavaliers face is whether to preserve their star point guard for a potential NBA Finals appearance at as close to 100% as possible or getting him back out on the court against a struggling, but dangerous Atlanta Hawks team to reassure their advancement to the final round of the playoffs against the Western Conference Champion.  The current predicament appears to sway in the direction of holding him out as long as possible because the team looks like they could capture the Eastern Conference Title without his services after claiming both games in Atlanta with the series moving to Cleveland for Games 3 & 4 starting Sunday.  It basically comes down to if you would rather have Kyrie Irving at maybe 50% for the Eastern Conference Final round or have him at maybe 85% - 90% for the NBA Finals against a more formidable opponent.

NFL PUTS HAMMER DOWN ON TOM BRADY AND NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

After weeks of speculation regarding potential forms punishments to Superbowl MVP quarterback Tom Brady and the New England Patriots for the alleged 'inflate gate', the NFL finally acted upon it.  Brady will be suspended up to 4 games without pay and the Patriot organization was fined one million dollars.  They also will lose two future draft choices, which will be their 2016  1st round pick and 2017 4th round selection.  It was initially thought around NFL circles that the golden boy of the league would possibly get just a slap on the wrist for his probable role in this act by way of a fine, but that definitely wasn't the case here.

STEPHEN CURRY WINS MVP AWARD

Superstar point guard, Stephen Curry was announced the 2015 NBA's most valuable player and it was well deserved.  He was the decisive winner receiving 100 of a possible 130 first place votes by beating out SG James Harden (2nd place, 25 votes) and SF Lebron James (3rd place, 5 votes).  Curry captured his first MVP trophy by finishing the season averaging 23.8 points per game and  7.7 assists per game, while leading the Golden State Warriors to an NBA best record of 67 - 15.

Mayweather Claims Victory in Bout Against Manny Pacquiao...

image.jpg

With votes from two judges of 116-112, and from a third of 112-110, Mayweather has taken the win against Manny Pacquiao in tonight's fight! With tonight's win, Floyd will retain both his WBA and WBC titles, and now he claims Pacquiao's WBO belt!

Despite Mayweather having an obvious record of 47-0 with 25 KO's (He's now at 48-0, 26 KO's), there were many, for whatever reason, that we're hoping for a victory in favor of Pacquiao. That notion became evident when Mayweather was announced as the winner, and the crowd burst with a series of boo's. Of course, none of that phased Mayweather.

This was undoubtedly the most lucrative fight of his career, not to mention boxing history, bringing in an estimated $400 million.

Floyd stated again tonight that following his next fight in September, he would be hanging up his boxing gloves for good.

CLEVELAND BROWNS REVEAL NEW UNIFORMS

The Cleveland Browns revealed their new and revamped look by displaying nine different color combinations with nine different current Browns, which consists of notable players such as hometown heroes Donte Whitner and newly acquired wideout Brian Hartline.  The players ranged in size going from the 5'8" Taylor Gabriel to the 6'7" Joe Thomas.  With a fan base that hasn't had much to cheer for in years, the Cleveland Browns organization hope to change the perception around the NFL as being one of the league's most down trodden organizations with a fresh new image and outlook in hopes that in some capacity it also aids in a positive direction going forward.  Here's a closer look at them

New York Jets Acquire WR Brandon Marshall...

Saturday, March 7, 2015 - The Jets recently made a trade that netted them all-pro wideout Brandon Marshall from the Chicago Bears in exchange for a fifth round pick.

At 30 years of age, Marshall did not reach 1000 yards receiving this year due to injuries, but will look to bounce back with the Jets.  The move gives New York another wideout to complement WR Eric Decker, whom they inked to a 4 - year deal last offseason.  Many believe this trade adds to the speculation that the Jets will make a move to go after the prized Oregon QB prospect, Marcus Mariota.  He would have two established wide receivers to help his transition into the NFL.

The mercurial WR Percy Harvin is expected to be released from the team soon.

Former Basketball Star Anthony Mason Dies at 48

Sunday, March 1, 2015 - Mason was admitted to NYU Langone Medical Center Feb 6 after presenting for heart troubles. He would suffer a heart attack while admitted to the facility, and was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure. . Reports then swarmed that he would potentially need a transport to survive. Mason lost his battle today, February 28, at 2:26am.

Beginning his professional career with the New Jersey Nets in 1989, Mason would go on to play 13 seasons total with 6 teams, including the Denver Nuggets, New York Knicks, Charlotte Hornets, Miami Heat, and Milwaukee Bucks. He was most remembered for his tenure with the Knicks.

Funeral arrangements are still pending.
