See How This Diva of Desserts Transformed Her Love of Baking Into a Booming Career.
People constantly ask me what I enjoy most about publishing my own magazine. That’s honestly one of the most difficult questions I get on a regular basis because there are so many things I could say what definitely stands out strongly is my ability to cover and celebrate anything I choose. One of the things I always wanted to do with Urban Grandstand Digital was celebrate those around me who are also striving to be the best they can be in life, business, and entrepreneurship. Running a business is not an easy task. Many say they want to be their own boss and answer to themselves, but they often don’t have a clue of what that takes I’m proud to say that my dear friend; VENTA UPSHAW, had it all together when she was launching her very own business. If she didn’t, she surely made it look that way. This Q&A is beyond special to me because it’s an opportunity to recognize, celebrate, and support someone I love like my very own family. Today, you will get to know someone I consider to be among the elite when it comes to this business.
So as I’m sure you’ve already guessed, VENTA UPSHAW is a master at baking, specifically sweets, desserts, and beyond. Now I certainly couldn’t say this, unless I was a master at eating these things (laughing). I’ve had the pleasure of Purchasing select items, but I’m surely not the only one. VENTA has a strong clientele throughout the city of Cleveland who faithfully support her works. Today, we’re giving you a glimpse into her world in this exclusive,!
U.G. Digital Magazine: First and foremost, I want to thank you for taking time out to be celebrated in this new issue. You are absolutely one of the reasons for my success and I’m grateful!
VENTA UPSHAW: Thank you for extending an invitation to be in your magazine. It is quite humbling to be considered although I wouldn't say I'm big time, I do however hope to be well known someday. I have always loved to bake ever since I was younger, after I made my first batch of brownies I fell in love with being a baker, so I decided to pursue becoming a baker. I studied pastry arts at Le Cordon Blue in Pittsburgh, Pa and earned my associates degree.
U.G. Digital Magazine: So I would love for you to take us back to the beginning. How did you arrive at being this big time baker? When did you know this was your calling? How did your journey begin? What did you feel like you wanted to accomplish as a baker, and what was most difficult?
VENTA UPSHAW: In the beginning I was not quite sure what I wanted to accomplish. I just knew I wanted to bring smiles to people who had events. I did eventually make my home based business official by obtaining my LLC in 2019. making myself the first to do it in my immediate family. The most difficult thing about my journey is self doubt, questioning myself and so forth.
U.G. Digital Magazine: It’s certainly a lot that goes into it, and you’re dealing with many different personalities. How did you learn to deal with the personalities you encounter?
VENTA UPSHAW: Dealing with different personalities surprisingly has not been an issue for me, I try to provide the best service possible, work with my customers and give them what they are looking for. All while trying not to make myself feel undervalued with pricing quotes. It can be quite difficult trying to stay at a range that many will think is budget friendly... but I have learned that the price is the price. So If the original price is out of budget I try to offer other options. I have learned that no matter what, I am my own worst critic, I do enjoy what I do and that I am not limited to just baking cakes. There are many more areas in baking to explore and most importantly I am always willing to learn and grow in my craft.
U.G. Digital Magazine: What do you enjoy most about what you do?
VENTA UPSHAW: I enjoy having creative freedom the most because I get to show not just my customer but myself just how far I have come. I haven't quite bounced back from the pandemic as others may have. And that is mainly because I am trying to figure out what exactly I want to offer along with my cakes. I am thinking of starting a cheesecake line and offering treats as a package with cake orders as well. So those will be some things I will be adding in addition to my cakes.
U.G. Digital Magazine: What plans do you have business-wise? Where in 5 years do you plan for the company to be?
VENTA UPSHAW: In 5 years I hope to still be around and better than I am today.
U.G. Digital Magazine: Where can everyone find you online?
VENTA UPSHAW: You may find me on Facebook at @SweetcreationsbyVee or at @Sweetcreationsbyvee_1 on Instagram.
