As a journalist, it’s often been said you’re supposed to remain neutral and non-biased. No personal feeling or emotion. Let’s be real here. There is absolutely no way to do that in the current moment; the truth is I’m sitting with one of the industry’s biggest and most important figures. To say I grew up to her music is an understatement. Knowing what my passion was, she and her family literally inspired my joy of music, the growth of my passion, and my every move in getting here. Allow me to introduce you to Suga-T!

First, let’s look at her contributions to hip-hop. Together, with her brothers and cousin, they meticulously laid a foundation that is simply unmatched when it comes to being independent. They signed a major distribution deal between SickWitIt Records & Jive Records, which in that time, was unheard of. It was the work they put in on their own that sealed the deal. They already had a worldwide fanbase following their every move. Naturally so, that has continued through the years. Suga-T has battled successfully through things most would look at as bumps, bruises, and career killers, and she’s always managed to rise like the phoenix she is.

While each member has respectively built an amazing solo career to follow, Suga-T was intentional about also pursuing her education and mastering in and beyond her craft. Today, she’s working hard at tackling the very thing that is killing our culture; Ageism! We’ve all seen it; especially in hip-hop, where one claims you can’t make music after a certain age. That doesn’t happen in any other genre of music but hip-hop. So many rappers will “retire” as they say for that very reason. And some ultimately make their way back because it’s actually their passion. Certainly, she’s not living by those standards, but someone needs to fight the fight for those who fall victim to the effects, and she has clearly stepped into that role.
